Genre vs Subgenre

Can someone explain the difference? My understanding was that Romance was the genre of fiction and Romantic Suspense was the subgenre. Is that not right? I want to be able to use the words correctly and have intelligent conversations. So help me out here.

Made a little progress today. I don't really want to stop for the night, but I'm getting tired and I need to get some rest. First, I intend to have a cup of tea and to read the first chapter of Debra Webb's Traceless.

That was always my interpretation re genre/subgenre.

Hope you enjoyed the cup of tea and the read. Sounds like a good way to spend an evening.

Thanks, Kelly!

Yes, the tea and read were good. Of course, there aren't enough hours in the day to do all the reading and writing I want!

That's how I always understood it too. Genre is Romance, subgenre is suspense/paranormal/contemporary/etc.

Okay, so I guess I'm not crazy...well, not as crazy as I thought.

That's what I always thought... but what do I know?

I'm not positive what the official meanings are, but I always understood it to be what you said. However, I think the terms can be used generally as well. Like the genre is paranormal and the subgenres are time travel, vampire, magic, shapeshifter, alternate universe, fantasy, etc... Maybe that's where the confusion arises?

Teri, we can be in the "I didn't know I was that smart" club together!
